Smarts, wits and a little lady called Luck.

In online gaming, there are two kinds of games: skills-based and game of chance.

Skills-based online games include, among others, the hugely popular massively multiplayer online game role-playing games (MMORPGs) like Ragnarok Online and World of Warcraft. These online games are played on such a huge scale that internet cafe sales have skyrocketed.

more and more internet cafes are even being encouraged by local distributors to feature online games such as these, both to gain their product more exposure, as well as generate profit for these cafes. back in my time, the battle.net was a pretty huge network of online gamers. i haven't gone online in a really long time. writing for your keep, isn't exactly the kind of job that leaves you much time for leisure.

besides, i've moved on to other equally interesting online games. a friend of mine had introduced me to online poker recently. he also happened to be the one to teach me how to play poker. i've seen him and a few friends of ours kick back for a game that could last up to the wee hours of the night. since i only knew tong-its and chikitcha, and the occasional blackjack, my curiousity was piqued.

i soon got the hang of the game, though, i wasn't ready for my college barkada's fast-paced kind of game. and the betting still confuses me! here i was, trying to remember all the pokers, and i had to be aware of the betting --- not to mention the poker phrases they use!

playing online is much faster, and for a beginner, it will take some time before you get the hang of it. don't worry about the betting, it will come to you in time. the key is learning how to play your cards, when to play big, or when to fold, among others.

i'll talk about betting soon. i need freshen my cup of coffee...

if i'm not mistaken, the annual reunion of ours began while we were all still in the seminary. 11 years since graduating from high school (nine, since my leaving the seminary), and we still look forward to our reunion. it was our catechist who suggested that we all meet for a day during our Christmas break, so we could bond as friends and peers outside the physical confines of the seminary. we began with a few pick-up games of basketball and football, and ended the day with a couple of drinks, maybe even dinner. some of us would linger over our drinks, play a few card games and talk about next year's reunion.

ironic for ex-seminarians to meet and mix, even after everyone's left the seminary (is that some kind of record --- not a single one of our batch becoming a part of the clergy?). there used to be thirty of us, half of that number are married now, while the others are still at the table playing their cards for time, or whatnot. it's like what my friend chad tells me, "With friends and wives, it's never halfway, you're either going all-in, or not. There are never bluffs, only good cards and bad cards. and always make sure you have the high cards."

i wonder how the latest reunion went...

i couldn't go --- am working nightshift now. damn.

PS. a friend of mine's invited me to a viewing of digital art. next week. will get the specs on that, and for now... Pit Señor!

barkadahan

Last year's Christmas break was a 3-day weekend. It was the same for New year, so naturally, everyone wants to squeeze as much time as they can from you (before other family obligations tie you down).

I'm luckier when my friends come a-calling. it's traditional for us, ex-seminarians, to do our reunions after Christmas (and right before New Year comes in). The rest of the guys were planning something for last Dec 30, friday, and the constant emails back and forth, kept me informed about the preparations.

with all the attention over our reunion for that friday, i got to thinking back to how our reunion started when i suddenly came across this online poker gaming site. it defines a "barkada" as follows:

"barkada: |bår-kä-DÃH| n. Identified as a false cognate because of its Spanish origins (a false cognate being a word existing in two languages, but giving meaning to different things). The original word in Spanish, spelled "barcada", originally meant "boatload". In its Filipino usage, the word "barkada" means a friend, or buddy. It is used as a mass noun to pertain to one person's group of close friends, collectively, rather than pertaining to just one friend. Oftentimes, the prefix 'ka-' is added when using the word in reference, or as an indirect object. (Curiously, as a mass noun, the word "barkada" returns to its connotive Spanish roots of 'boatload')."

now that is interesting, isn't it?

Christmas Leftovers and Reruns.

christmas came and went. had great gifts. didn't get drunk. would have spent an awful time deconstructing my extended family experience as it spiralled off the deep end had not my girl invited me to spend christmas with her family.

suffice to say, i did not get laid. but shortly after the clock struck 12AM on christmas day, every one went to bed and i --- i who am great, bold and overweight --- got control of the TV (which rarely happens at home)!

so with a plateful of christmas leftovers in one hand, and the remote in the other, i began my REAL christmas celebration.

i started things with some scintillating tennis action featuring two leggy women athletes. i also viewed reruns of two movies (that i now forget), epic classics of Ultimate Fighting Championships (woohoooo!!!) and a telecast of the World Poker Tour in Paris.

i finally saw who this tony g. guy is. i recall a story where lederer got so pissed off at tony g., that he didn't even bother shaking other guy's hand as he left the table. talk about poker vendetta... i will say though that tony g. is as loud and brash as they come. interesting table that one. i hope to see the rerun soon.

but not all i saw were reruns. i caught this bit of news fresh off a site while googling tony g.'s bio, after the show. interesting to see that poker has a site especially tailored for pinoys. now i believe that all good things come in the end of regular programming.

i've copied the content and pasted it below (trimmed it down to the bare necessities, naturally). so, enjoy!!!

"Official PokerBarkada launch set for January 2006 with huge bonuses and great offers

A new poker site is coming, featuring a twist that’s both global and uniquely Filipino! PokerBarkada.com is your online portal to meeting Pinoy friends from across the globe for a bit of chitchat and fun!

Conceived for the express purpose of drawing together Filipinos around the world, through an online venue, and through poker, PokerBarkada.com appeals to the very heart of the Pinoy psyche: The penchant for drawing together no matter where they are, and from what part of the Philippines they originally come from; and the innate love for card games.

I still recall my old GI Joe action figures. my very first one was a cobra soldier in blue. two hours after i took it out of its package, it was missing a thumb... i wonder whatever happened to it. gotta love those action figures...

Had our office christmas party last night at this fine band bar in off the city circle, called Handuraw Cafe --- Have great food, will come! Woohooo!

The pizza was great; the pasta with pesto sauce was to die for; the Hors D'oeuvre spread was tantalizing, and so was the roasted porker (Minus that "Oh traditional fruit-in-mouth, wherefore art thou?!" apostrophe, that is).

Handuraw had just hosted Toyphilia 2005, the week before. Toyphilia 2005 is a toy and hobby exhibit that featured toys for big boys and small alike, from RCs, models, scale models of anything and everything. it also featured short films, PC and Video games. Among the games featured were online poker, a pocket tourney poker challenge (Texas Hold'em, no less), and a demo of that intriguing and fast-paced poker game variation, Badugi. I've only recently learned how to play Badugi, and i'll tell you, it's pretty fast game.

And while action figures may still be in vogue, i've moved on to bigger things. the World of Warcraft beckons. perhaps.

after one more Badugi deal...

barkadas and beginnings.

the word barkada is filipino for a group of friends. be it the
"since highschool" kind, or office buddies who meet once or twice a
month for a game of poker or billiards.

my barkada are old friends from the seminary --- how i entered
the seminary and got booted out comes later. but i will say this: not
all who go through the experience become saints. to date, three have
embraced communism, five of us are now Protestants, another and yet
another has become something of an all-out sex machine. while we still
meet for coffee, we've gone our separate ways now and have discovered
different interests.

I freelance for a local mag and write copy for a web design
company. that's where i came across this interesting site about
barkadas. i've also turned to online gaming and am proud that i'm an
avid Diablo II Expansion fan. i'd often go for hours on the battle.net.
i've also tried ragnarok. i found the characters cute, but ultimately
found the game tested my patience too often. i've also recently taken
up online poker. Now i know that there are two kinds of online games:
diablo ii is a game of skill, while online poker is a game of chance.

if you play traditional poker, you'll know. online poker gaming
is faster, the tension and feel for the game is different because the
players have usernames and avatars. the rush is different; the pace is
faster, the pay-off is just as big.
