Set your Sights on the New Lamborghini Murcielago LP640

If you’ve recently acquired your fortune and want a supercar that reflects it, you might want to give the new Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 a second look. This new Lambo oozes class and glamour like no other. Its look is unique and sports a luxurious aura about it. But this supercar doesn’t only shine in the looks department. It is well-equipped with the right stuff beneath the hood to get you where you need to be in an unbelievably short amount of time.

The new version of this highly successful super-sports car features considerable innovations in terms of body design and mechanics. And also with a new name: Murciélago LP640, which refers to its engine position - longitudinale posteriore - and to its power 640 hp. Designers and engineers have not only focused on reworking the engine, suspensions, gearbox, exhaust system, brakes and electronics, but also the interior and exterior design; improvements that make the Murciélago LP 640 the most extreme and fastest sports car in its class, placing it at the very top.

The first vehicles will be available in spring 2006. Since the original Murciélago’s debut at the 2001 International Car Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, around 2,000 vehicles have left the car plant in Sant’ Agata Bolognese.

In their reinterpretation of the Murciélago LP640, the designers at the Lamborghini Style Centre have remained true to the traditional Lamborghini principles of purism, sport and function. The Murciélago LP640 now appears even more aggressive, with the new front and rear bumpers contributing significantly to its appearance. The exhaust system terminal has been incorporated in the diffuser on the rear bumper. Other innovations include the rear lights, which enhance the distinguishing features of the Murciélago LP640, making it unmistakable even at night. The design of the sides is also worth mentioning: while the area behind the air intake on the right side is practically closed, the left side features a vast aperture for cooling the oil radiator. Together with the aerodynamically defined front and rear, this proves yet again that the shape of a Lamborghini is dictated by function.

For those wishing to flaunt the heart of their Murciélago LP640, on request an engine hood made of transparent glass can be supplied. The rear view mirrors and the windscreen wipers have been modified to improve aerodynamics and “Hermera” light metal wheel rims have been added. The graphics of the instrument panel lights in the cockpit have been revamped. The interior upholstery also has a new look thanks to the lozenge-shaped stitching.

The engine of the new Murciélago LP640 has undergone outstanding and radical modification. The increased bore and longer stroke have boosted the displacement of the classic 60° V-engine from 6.2 litres to 6.5 litres (6,496 cm3). Thus the already extraordinary 580 hp engine power has now been elevated to an impressive peak of 640 hp (471 kW) at 8,000 min-1. The 12-cylinder engine reaches a maximum torque of 660 Nm at 6,000 min-1. Naturally, the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 complies with every European and North American law governing exhaust fumes.

This “evolutionary leap forward” has been possible thanks to a coherent review of every engine component: the cylinder head and the entire intake system (based on the tried and tested Lamborghini variable geometry system), have been completely reworked. The crankshaft, camshafts and exhaust system have also undergone innovation.

The increase in power naturally determines an increase in performance. The excellent performance of the Murciélago LP640 means it can now accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds (0.4 seconds faster than the previous model).

Lamborghini engineers have also concentrated on improving torque development. The “drivability” of the engine is enhanced by a continuous variable timing system (intake and exhaust side) and a drive-by-wire engine management system.

To meet the thermal requirements of the engine, the engineers have foreseen a considerably larger oil radiator and subsequently, the air intake on the left side of the vehicle has been enlarged. The liquid cooling system, characterised by the Lamborghini VACS system (variable geometry air inlet system) remains the same. Electronically managed air intakes open depending on the outdoor temperature and the need for cooling air, ensuring maximum aerodynamic efficiency.

More power and higher torque call for superior gearbox component performance. To meet these new demands, the new Murciélago LP640 features a modified sixratio gearbox as well as a tougher rear differential and new axle shafts. On request, the e-gear automatic gearbox is also available equipped with the new dedicated “Thrust” (acceleration programme) mode.

Just like its predecessors, the Murciélago LP640 features permanent four-wheel drive, based on the reliable Lamborghini VT (Viscous Traction) system. The system is self-governing and does not feature any electronic controls. The drive force is usually divided between the front and rear axles in the ratio of 30 to 70. An independent control circuit adjusts the distribution of the drive force depending on dynamic oscillation, weight distribution and the relative friction factor in perfect synchronisation with the Visco clutch. In extreme cases, up to 100% of the drive force can be applied to a single axle.

The electronics have also been updated. The modified engine control units improve engine performance and “driveability” thanks to “closed loop” control.

Every engine and vehicle parameter is managed and controlled by three “master” control units and a “satellite” control unit. The master control units consist of two Lamborghini "LIE" engine control units, a Lamborghini “GFA” (Auxiliary Function Management) control unit and a Lamborghini “PMC” (Power Motor Control) satellite control unit. The control units are interconnected by a CAN Bus line.

The body of the Murciélago LP640 with its characteristic scissor doors is created from the prized union of sheet steel and honeycombed carbon fibre, glued and riveted together.

Driving, handling and stability at high speed are enhanced by new springs and stabilisers, as well as by a redesigned electronically controlled damper. The "antidive" and "anti-squat" features on the axles, which efficiently prevent so-called "brake diving" and "squatting", have not been changed. The two springs on every rear wheel, the single spring on every front wheel and the damper are placed coaxially.

The new aluminium "Hermera" rims measure 8 ½" x 18" (fore carriage) and 13" x 18" (rear axle). The vehicle can be fitted with various sized Pirelli P Zero "Rosso" tyres. The Murciélago LP640 features 245/35 ZR 18 front tyres and 335/30 ZR 18 rear tyres. For sports use, especially on racetracks, Lamborghini provides optional Pirelli P Zero “Corsa” (Race) tyres. Pirelli P “Sottozero” (Sub zero) winter tyres are currently being developed.

Brakes and safety: optional ceramic carbon brakes

A super sports car such as the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 ensures high safety levels.

The dual hydraulic circuit brake system equipped with a vacuum brake booster ensures considerable deceleration values. The self-ventilating front and rear brake disks measure 380 mm x 34 mm and 355 mm x 32 mm respectively. The control circuit of the four-channel anti-blocking system (ABS) with electronic brake control (DRP) and traction control (TCS) features a new characteristic curve. The system consists in an electro-hydraulic control unit and four speed sensors.

When particularly high braking performance is required, on request it is possible to equip the vehicle with 380 mm x 36 mm ceramic carbon brakes featuring six-piston brake callipers. Thus, less pressure needs to be applied to the brake pedal and the braking distance is reduced. Even in extremely demanding conditions there is almost no perceptible fading. Considerably reduced weight and superior lifetime represent two further advantages, as well as a captivating graphic design.

The new Murciélago LP640 also meets with even the most rigorous safety requirements. Thanks to the two front airbags (a 60-litre single stage air bag on the driver side and a 130-litre two stage airbag on the passenger side), the Murciélago LP640 complies with every international law in effect in terms of head-on and side crashes, impacts against posts, occupant safety, fuel supply integrity and flammability of materials. The luggage compartment also complies with childproof safety regulations.

The seats in the cockpit have undergone the most radical changes; more spacious and equipped with redesigned head restraints, the seats now ensure better comfort. The leather upholstery features lozenge-shaped stitching called "Q-citura". The same design is recaptured on the upholstery on the door panels, the panel between the seats and the engine compartment, and on the roof panel.

A new instrument panel has been developed with lights featuring a new graphic design, flanked by a new Kenwood car radio with a 6.5” widescreen monitor and DVD, MP3 and WMA player. An optional navigation system is also available (standard in Japan).

Like its predecessors, the new Murciélago LP640 can be customised thanks to the special fittings and upholstery packages. For the first time, the renowned characteristic Murciélago Roadster asymmetric and driver-oriented fittings and upholstery are available for the Coupé, featuring a perforated leather driver’s seat and door panel.

Thanks to the "Privilegio" customisation program, any Murciélago LP640 can be transformed into a customised sports car. For example, the cockpit can be enhanced with an extremely refined carbon finish applied to the air conditioning control panel, the control lever console and the parking brake.

2009 GM Camaro

American muscle! Everybody knows what this particular phrase
refers to. It’s not about American jocks on steroids, no it’s about that good
old brawny cars that doesn’t need any aftermarket kits to leave you in the
dust. We have seen these types of cars in countless movies usually paired with
a rough and rugged actor. Muscle car is a term used to refer to a variety of
high performance automobiles. The term principally refers to American,
Australian and to a lesser extent South African models from the late 1960s and
early 1970s and generally describes a 2-door rear wheel drive mid-size car with
a large, powerful V8 engine and special trim, intended for maximum torque on
the street or in drag racing competition. It is distinguished from sports cars,
which were customarily considered smaller, two-seat cars, or GTs, two-seat or
2+2 cars intended for high-speed touring and possibly road racing.
High-performance full-size or compact cars are arguably excluded from this
category, as are the breed of compact sports coupes inspired by the Ford
Mustang. Other factors used in defining classic muscle cars are their age and
country of origin.

The term "muscle car" did not enter common usage
until after production of the cars had essentially ended. It is generally
accepted that popular, widespread usage of the term took hold by the early to
mid-1980s. During their heyday, print media usually referred to this class of
vehicle as "supercars". There are many types of American muscle car
to be had. Top choices are usually from ford, Chevrolet, Dodge and GM. We all
know and love those GTOs, Mustangs and of course who could ever forget the
Camaro.

There was a strange time warp at the 2006 North American
International Auto Show in Detroit.
The calendar said it was January 2006 but the cars on display made many think
the clock had been turned back more than three and a half decades.

On display were a new Shelby Mustang, a new Dodge Challenger
and a new Chevrolet Camaro. The last time all of those constellations aligned
were a quarter-century plus 11 years ago.

But it appears the pony car era, created in the mid-1960s
with the birth of the original Ford Mustang and then resurrected a couple of
years ago with the rebirth of the '69 Mustang as a 2005 model, is galloping
again. Not only did Chevrolet unveil its Camaro concept but the Chrysler Group
unveiled a very retro Dodge Challenger concept.

While the smoothly curvaceous Challenger looked like it was
simply reissued, though in a somewhat more modern size because of its Chrysler
LX underpinnings, the Camaro concept had a more contemporary and angular
appearance that looked cutting edge, and we mean that both literally and
figuratively.

This was not a retro or reissued '69 Camaro. In fact, some
might have wondered if this car was designed in the Chevy studio at all. It's
edginess looked Cadillac inspired, and if all you caught was a quick glance
through the crowd around the car, you might have thought you'd wandered out of
the GM display and into the Mitsubishi stand.

GM says the Camaro concept is a "thoroughly modern
interpretation of the classic sport coupe" with "dramatic
design" and "responsive performance."

GM still is working on the rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform on
which a future production Camaro would be built. The concept version was based
on the same architecture as the Pontiac Solstice, though that platform was
modified to accept a 400-horsepower, small-block V8 powertrain borrowed from
the Chevrolet Corvette.

By using Active Fuel Management to shut off cylinders not
needed for highway cruising, GM figures the modern Camaro could achieve <st1:metricconverter productid="30 miles" w:st="on">30 miles</st1:metricconverter> per gallon in
such circumstances, yet still provide the off-the-line muscle that made the
pony cars appealing in the first place. Putting that power to the pavement in
the concept cars are huge 22-inch rear wheels, with 21s up front to provide
steering control and with 14-inch disc brake rotors to provide stopping power.

While the exterior has a modern edge and attitude, the
interior has more retro styling cues with two large main gauges and with other
gauges located at the front of the center console.

GM says the concept "is intended to explore customer
reaction to design and engineering elements that might lead to an all-new
version of the Camaro," the Chevy pony car that ceased production after
the 2002 model year.

The Camaro concept was unveiled at the 2006 North American
International Auto Show in Detroit.
We're looking for production to resume as soon as 2008.

Toyota Prius Breaks Million Mark

Apparently, people are really starting to see the benefits
of owning a hybrid car. According to figures released this week by Toyota, sales of the
iconic Toyota Prius, the first hybrid to be mass marketed, have now surpassed
the 1 million mark. From January to April 2008 dealers sold 66,100 Prius units,
a pace that, should it continue, will bring end of the year sales to 198,300 an
increase of 7.9% over 2007. Currently overall sales are smaller in Japan and Europe,
but climbing at a faster rate than in the North American market, which is
suffering fallout from the weak credit market and anxieties about recession.

Since the Prius was first launched in 1997, cumulative sales
of the gas-electric hybrid have reached 1.028 million as of the end of April
2008. It is estimated that use of the vehicle over the past ten years has
accounted for a decrease in global carbon dioxide emission of 4.5 million tons.

For the first four months of 2008 there were 24,200 Prius sales
in Japan,
an improvement that should generate a 24.5% increase over 2007 for that market
by the end of the year. In Europe, Prius sales
in the first four months reached 14,200 units, a projected increase of 32.3
percent over 2007 by the end of the year.

Toyota has a stated goal of selling 1 million hybrid
vehicles per year by the early 2010s. Many are getting Priuses due to the fact
that it can really be customized to utilize electric power. This means that you
can actually charge the car as would a cell phone. There are still many that
aren’t completely sold on the whole hybrid-car thing however, with these
abovementioned number, things are really changing fast.

2008 BMW M3

The 2008 BMW M3 is either a complete winner or a big
disappointment. It all depends on your expectations. If you're looking for a
supremely fast, incredibly capable back-road stormer, you won't be
disappointed; the E92 is even faster than the previous E46 M3. If, however, you
think the M3 should be more than just speed, you'll be disappointed. After only
a few seconds behind the wheel, it becomes obvious that the M3's engineers
traded some driver involvement in return for more speed.

More speed, in this case, comes from the retirement of the
inline-six cylinder engine that has defined the previous two generations of
M3s. As it turns out, there was no more power to be had from a block with six
holes in it. The previous 3.2-liter developed 333 horsepower, and the only way
to add more ponies would have been to add more displacement. That sounds easy
enough, but it wasn't - the engine block was already bored to its maximum, and
increasing the stroke would have reduced the engine's maximum RPM. Thus, the
engineers had no choice but to add two more cylinders.

The new V-8 is anything but a half-hearted attempt at fixing the problem. It
is, after all, based on the powerhouse V-10 from the M5. Whereas the old
inline-six was iron, the V-engines' larger bore spacing allows them to be made
of aluminum, and as a result, the V-8 actually weighs <st1:metricconverter productid="33 lb" w:st="on">33 lb</st1:metricconverter> less than the old six.
We've covered the detailed engine specifications in previous stories, but the
important numbers are very impressive: 4.0-liters, 414 horsepower, 295 lb-ft,
8400-rpm redline. Press the start button and the V-8 barks to life instantly
with a tinny clatter from its thin-walled, equal-length headers. Eight
individual butterflies minimize the distance between the throttle butterflies
and intake valves, so the engine responds instantaneously to prods of the
accelerator.

Though the clutch is a twin-disc design (the first in an M3), the pedal is
soft and easy to modulate. The shifter is familiar 3-series, which is to say
precise and satisfying, if slightly rubbery. Mash the loud pedal, and the quiet
V-8 turns into a screaming demon. Thrust builds gradually until 3900 rpm (the
torque peak), but never falls off. In fact, the engine's note becomes more and
more hysterical as the tach swings clockwise. From 6000 to the 8400-rpm rev
limiter, it sounds angrier and more ferocious than any V-8 you've ever heard
this side of Maranello. The soundtrack is nothing short of magic.

From a review:

Thanks to our tester's Electronic Damper Control, ride quality is
phenomenal. On Spain's
smooth roads, it seems far more complaint than the previous M3's, and yet body
motions are perfectly controlled. The new M3 understeers mildly, but that's
easily fixed with a nudge of the right foot: in second gear, the rear will
easily step out into a controlled power slide. In faster corners, lots of throttle
induces gorgeous four-wheel drifts.

The biggest letdown - and it's a huge one - is the steering. Whereas other
3-series (and all previous M3s) read the road surface to your fingertips, the
M3 is frustratingly numb on center. It transmits only the largest of messages,
and effort is too light and doesn't build naturally. The ratio is wonderfully
quick but, to add insult to injury, the M3's turning radius feels vastly larger
than any other 3-series.

Brake feel is excellent, but pedal effort rose precipitously during lapping
of the 26-turn Ascari racetrack in Spain despite aggressive (read:
noisy) pads. Even though we had to pull into pit lane for a few minutes after
each lap, brake fade set in after a few laps. The M3's hefty curb weight is to
blame - we expect it to weigh more than <st1:metricconverter productid="3,700 lb" w:st="on">3,700 lb</st1:metricconverter> when it arrives
stateside. And while BMW has gone to great lengths to keep curb weight down -
the carbon fiber roof, a huge cost item, saves eleven pounds - the fact is that
the M3 has gained almost a half ton in twenty years.

The list of 3-series parts redesigned and re-engineered for M3 use is
staggering - the V-8 car shares surprisingly few parts with those with a
six-cylinder under the hood. BMW isn't known for frivolous modifications, and
all of the changes serve a performance purpose. Unfortunately, they seem to
also dilute the driving experience. Once a direct, raw, and frenetic monster,
the M3 has morphed into a polished and refined grand tourer.

The original M3 was a track-ready, high-strung performer that made no
excuses in its performance. As fun in a 15-mph school zone as it was at
ten-tenths on a race track, it dominated everything that came its way. And
while it's likely that the new M3 is faster around the Nordschleife than its
competitors, it's lost a good bit of the driver involvement that has made
previous Ms Legends. At the end of the day, we don't just expect fast lap times
from an M3; we expect it to put a big smile on our faces. And this time around,
the smiles just aren't as big.

Toyota is proud to introduce the 10th generation of its very successful
Corolla line. The 2009 Toyota Corolla continues its ancestors’ legacy of being
the world’s most popular passenger car. Corollas have been making waves the
world over due to its relatively low price tag and outstanding fuel economy.
This is the primary reason why more than 30 million have been sold already in
over 140 countries. The new Corolla comes at a low price tag without feeling
cheap. Indeed Toyota has not sacrificed quality with its latest offering. It has a feel not unlike
those found at more expensive models. New and experienced drivers will not have
second thoughts on getting this deliciously crafted automobile. Like before,
the 2009 model comes with few distractions and straightforward controls.

For the ultimate low-budget wheels you turn to the Corolla
base model, but it has manual, wind-up windows and manual door locks. Upgrading
to the Corolla LE includes power windows and door locks. If you fancy a fancier
interior, the wood-grain trim in the Corolla XLE goes in that direction,
although you can't get leather. Finally, there are two sportier models, the
Corolla S which looks the part and has some seat and chassis upgrades, and the
Corolla XRS which brings a bigger engine, brakes, and tires to the party.

All models come with standard safety features like six
airbags, ABS, Electronic stability control and traction control. Also, it
features high-grade seatbelts that will hold even in extreme accidents, that is
assuming of course that you are wearing them.

The 2009 model offer a much more spacious cabin than its
predecessor. Once inside, you will be forgiven in thinking it’s a Camry. It’s
that roomy. All in all it’s definitely a good investment for those looking to
purchase a budget car with bangs and whistles that rival those of more
expensive models. The future once again looks rosy for Toyota and its uber-succesful Corolla
The quirky but lovable Mazda5 mini minivan has been refreshed for 2008 with updated styling, a more comprehensive list of standard features and an improved interior. It stands out among the sea of tall, six-passenger crossovers and bloated minivans, because it’s small and sporty enough to drive like a compact sedan, yet has the room to haul the fam and all the gear that comes with ‘em autopartswarehouse.

Externally, the Mazda5’s new front fascia, grille, headlights and taillights are slightly more aggressive, but the vehicle still resembles a swollen Honda Fit more than it does typical crossovers or minivans. The improvements inside are more dramatic, with an updated shift panel and center console that offer better ergonomics and new electroluminescent gauges. Second-row passengers now get air vents with fan-speed controls, while extra armrests and an auxiliary audio jack should make long trips more bearable for road tripping families. A one-touch lever folds seats forward, creating up to 44.4 cu. ft. of storage.

The base Sport model starts at $18,630, and includes 17-in. alloy wheels, power door locks, second row under-seat storage and remote keyless entry. Also standard across all models are steering wheel-mounted audio controls and a tire pressure monitoring system. The Touring model, at $21,245, gets extras like sportier bodywork, a moonroof and an in-dash CD changer. The top-end Grand Touring model ($23,000) is equipped with Bluetooth, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights and heated leather seats that can be bought at autopartswarehouse.

Powered by a 2.3-liter, 153-hp four-cylinder, the Mazda5’s relatively light curb weight of 3417 lbs. will appease enthusiasts, since most of the competition keeps getting bulkier and more unwieldy. Though the five-speed automatic is the default choice (producing 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway), the 5-speed manual is the gearbox of choice for drivers hoping to resist the mundane duties of family transport. The manual gets slightly better EPA numbers (22/28 mpg), but it’s only available in entry-level Sport trim.

The 2008 Mazda5’s improvements should make it even more of a contender in a market where vehicles keep getting bigger, thirstier and more expensive. —Basem Wasef

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Imagine a conventional BMW X5 morphed into a hatchback coupe with a 400-hp twin-turbo V8 and a bleeding edge all-wheel drive system thrown in for good measure. Well, that’s the new X6, which furthers the four-door coupe trend started by the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Jaguar XF. Soon the mini segment will also include the Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera, but this BMW is the only crossover four-door coupe we’ve seen—ever. And while some might find the look a bit odd, we think it’s positively dripping with machismo.

There are two versions of the X6. The base XDrive 35i uses BMW’s sweatheart 306-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline six. The XDrive 50i packs an all-new 400-hp 4.4-liter V8 twin turbo. Both come with the computer-controlled XDrive all-wheel-drive system and a new, fast-shifting 6-speed automatic with shifter paddles on the steering wheel according to autopartswarehouse.

The V8 shows off a new design, unrelated to the one that served in so many big Bimmers (and Range Rovers) over the last 10 years. The direct injection packages the two small Garrett turbochargers and catalytic converters inside the V between the cylinder heads. There are even separate twin intercoolers. The result? A rather robust 400 hp and 450 lb.-ft. of torque at engine speeds as low as 1750 rpm.

The high-riding X6 is the first BMW vehicle to come with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), a new version of XDrive that distributes engine torque between the front and rear axles and now side-to-side, too. In other words, there’s torque vectoring at all four wheels for autopartswarehouse

DPC uses an advanced computer control and an innovative rear differential that incorporates two planetary gearsets and two clutch packs. That lets the system multiply torque to an individual rear wheel so DPS can help steer the vehicle by directing torque to either of them. This unique BMW technology works while accelerating or decelerating and enhances steering precision, too. In fast corners with abrupt steering maneuvers or when the driver suddenly lifts off the gas pedal, DPC simply improves stability.

We drove the new X6 near BMW’s factory here, where the mountainous territory was filled with foggy, wet two-lane roads, Interstate highways, and wet and dry road courses at the nearby Michelin tire development test track. So we really got a taste of what the X6 could do, and we were impressed as per autopartswarehouse.

The X6’s body and chassis dynamics were surprisingly good. Well, maybe not that surprising, because this is a BMW, after all. But while many other crossovers have a tendency to plow into the corners, that’s not the case with the X6. Better still was the thrust of that techy new V8, with exemplary performance and nearly instantaneous torque delivery. And for those of us that crave a little magic from the exhaust tips, the X6 delivers a gutsy growl. At full throttle, it sounds downright hungry—as if it wants to chow down on some Stuttgart steel. Perhaps a plateful of Porsche Cayenne?

BMW says the twin-turbo I-6 version will do the 0-60 mph run in 6.6 seconds, and the twin-turbo V8 version sprint to that speed in 5.3 seconds. Pretty darn good for a truck that weighs around 5300 pounds.

We dug the X6’s style and were impressed by the interior room—well, at least the room that people will occupy. The back seat could easily swallow my tall frame, despite the sloping roof. But in terms of practical room for gear, the X6 is limited. If you need to carry more than 59.7 cu. ft. of gear with the rear seats folded, maybe the X5 (with an extra 15.3 cubes) is a better choice.

The XDrive 35i will start at $53,275, and the XDrive 50i will start at $63,775—both figures including $775 destination and delivery. The long option list runs to 22 items and seven packages. BMW says that next year, it will offer the X6 with a new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter clean diesel engine as well as a Two-Mode hybrid drive system. Now those two are certainly worth waiting for, if you ask us. —Jim McCraw

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

Ferrari is present at the 78th International Geneva Motor Show with its entire GT range, the F2007 single-seater that won last year’s Formula 1 Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships, the legendary 365 GTB4 “Daytona” which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and a special area dedicated to the One-to-One Programme.
autopartswarehouse

Taking pride of place at the Ferrari stand, however, is the 612 Scaglietti, the model being used to inaugurate the new One-to-One Personalisation Programme. Ferrari intends to allow every client to fully personalise this flagship model, courtesy of a wide array of new content as well as the options available through the Carrozzeria Scaglietti Programme. In fact, a special dedicated “atelier” area has been set up at the factory in which clients can put together their own bespoke 612 Scaglietti accessory by accessory, detail by detail. In exactly the same way as they would at a haute couture fashion house, owners can choose details and materials they want for their car in consultation with the Ferrari experts who will actually build it to their exact specifications and tastes.

We have recreated a compact version of the real atelier (due to be officially opened in Maranello in the near future) on the stand. Further such ateliers will then be opened over the next few months in other parts of the world.

Clients will be assisted in making their selections by dedicated Programme consultants who can help them at every stage of defining their car’s specification. Naturally, despite the many variations on offer, the Ferrari flagship’s benchmark quality and styling characteristics will remain unchanged and no modifications will be permitted that would impinge on the signature Prancing Horse safety and reliability.

All of these unique new 612 Scagliettis will be built in a dedicated assembly area at the Maranello factory.
autopartswarehouse

To underscore the sheer depth and flexibility of the personalisation options available for the 612 Scaglietti, we are exhibiting at Geneva a version which has been inspired, right down to its perforated leather Daytona seats, by the classic 365 GTB4 which will stand alongside it. The famous 365 GTB4 was, of course, affectionately dubbed the Daytona in honour of the historic one-two-three finish delivered by the Scuderia Ferrari in the eponymous 24 Hour Race in 1967. The arrival of the 365 GTB4 was a significant moment in the company’s history and Ferrari will be celebrating this car’s 40th anniversary in 2008 with a series of events across the globe.
2008 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti Personalization Program Review

The 612 Scagliettis being used to launch the One-to-One Programme incorporate a series of technical evolutions that reflect the Ferrari philosophy of constantly introducing innovations in each model. Most notably, the V12 flagship now boasts an electrochromic panoramic roof which covers the entire top of the cabin. This has the dual advantage of giving occupants the feeling of driving along in a drop-top whilst enjoying the comfort and safety of a coupé. However, this is no ordinary panoramic roof. It is made from electrochromic glass which can be changed at the touch of a button to adjust the levels of sunlight allowed into the cabin. The electrochromic glass solution was developed in close collaboration with Saint Gobain, a partner with whom Ferrari has most recently developed a similar highly innovative solution for the Superamerica.

In addition to its electrochromic roof, the 612 Scaglietti also sports the aptly named SuperFast gearbox which delivers an exceptional gear-shifting time of 100 milliseconds and a reduced inertia clutch to enhance the engine’s responsiveness still further. The iconic Ferrari manettino, now featured on the entire range, has also been added to the steering wheel.

Another model being showcased at Geneva is the F430 Spider, a rear-engined 8-cylinder that combines blistering performance with open-top driving pleasure. The version on the stand is displayed in a historic colour Grigio Ferro, with a sophisticated Cioccolato interiors. The F430 Spider has proved an enormous success since its launch and in 2007 won prestige awards from international publications, such as Quattroruote, Autozeitung, Auto Illustrierte and Auto Motor und Sport.

The Company’s sporting history is also represented on the stand by the 599 GTB Fiorano, the highest performance production model ever built at Maranello and seen here in a classic Rosso Corsa livery, and the 430 Scuderia, an extreme model voted “Dream Car of the Year” by the authoritative British car magazine Top Gear.
autopartswarehouse

The more track-oriented side of Ferrari’s dual soul is represented most ably on the stand by the F2007, the single-seater that won the World Championship last year, bringing to 15 the overall number of Formula 1 Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles won by Maranello so far.

Although it’s scheduled to debut at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show, we can bring you the goods on the 2009 Hummer H3T now. As expected, it’s essentially a standard H3 with a utility bed out back. A 22-inch-longer wheelbase helps to accommodate the bed without sacrificing interior passenger room. The cargo box itself will offer GM’s bed rail accessory system, so although it’s only 5 feet long it should prove more useful than your typical SUT add-on.
Everything else about the H3T is identical to the standard SUV model. Base models get the 3.7-liter inline five-cylinder while the H3T Alpha gets the 5.3-liter V8. Hard-core off-roaders will appreciate the fact that the optional off-road package adds front and rear differential lockers along with lower transfer case gears and 33-inch tires. No word on whether the standard H3 will offer the same upgrades for 2009. Production of the 2009 Hummer H3T starts in the third quarter of this year, so expect to see it in dealers by August.

The new Nissan GTR. Tested

The Numbers the World Has Been Waiting for

We know you want the numbers and we're not going to waste your time. Neither is Nissan. Its 2009 GT-R hits 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, quicker than the last Dodge Viper, Corvette Z06 and Porsche 911 Turbo we tested. Keep your foot pinned, and after another tap on the upshift paddle it will clear the quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds at more than 120 mph.

We know this because we've just returned from Japan where we tested a privately owned Nissan GT-R on an airstrip outside Tokyo. The car we tested was a Japanese-spec example with 1,500 break-in kilometers on its odometer. It's owned by Japanese journalist Jun Nishikawa and packs the same hardware the U.S. car will get: a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 that generates at least 473 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque. It had the same six-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox and the same adjustable dampers which, by now, you've read plenty about.

What you likely haven't heard about is this: launch control. Despite its bold 3.5-second 0-60-mph claim, Nissan has been keeping this little bit of technological wizardry a secret. Test a GT-R in the homeland, however, and the need for confidentiality is quickly overwhelmed by the need for speed.

Controlling the Launch
Activating the Nissan GT-R's launch control is a matter of configuring its transmission, dynamics control and damping adjustments properly. The transmission and damping switches must both be set to the R mode and the VDC must be switched off completely by holding the VDC-R button down for a few seconds. Then it's just a matter of pinning the brake with your left foot and wooding the throttle with your right, not unlike the technique used to produce a tire-shredding burnout in that '85 Camaro you drove in high school.

The result, however, is quite different. The computer holds the engine at 4,500 rpm and waits for you to lift your left foot off the brake pedal. When you do the GT-R produces the most crushing acceleration of virtually any production car in the world. Our test was conducted on a fairly low-grip surface that produced lots of rear wheelspin before the GT-R's sophisticated all-wheel-drive system engaged the front wheels and it thundered down the track. Its 3.3-second 0-60-mph run and 11.6 at 120.9 mph performance make the GT-R the quickest car we've ever tested.autopartswarehouse

It's even quicker than the Porsche 911 Turbo Tiptronic, but not by much. The German hits 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and blasts through the quarter-mile in 11.6 at 118.5 mph. Due to their lack of all-wheel drive, the Dodge Viper and Corvette Z06 are held back by traction limitations. Despite its 600-hp V10, the last Viper coupe we tested reached 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and finished the quarter-mile 11.8 at 125.3 mph. The Corvette Z06 isn't even close. Once impressive, its 4.1-second 0-60-mph run and 12-second quarter-mile at 121.8 mph are now well off the pace, which is why Chevy is creating the supercharged Corvette ZR1.autopartswarehouse

In an effort to preserve its drivetrain and relations with the owner, we only activated the launch control twice, but with a few more attempts to calm the violent wheelspin, the numbers would likely have been even better.

Leave the launch control off and the tranny in R mode, and the car is still sick quick. Sixty mph arrives in 4.0 seconds and the quarter-mile disappears in 12.3 seconds at 120.6 mph. All our testing was completed using manual shifting.autopartswarehouse

World-Class Braking
It requires 15-inch rotors, six-piston Brembo calipers and sticky Bridgestone Potenza RE070R rubber to bring a 3,836-pound GT-R to rest from 60 mph in only 104 feet. That's only 1 foot longer than the Porsche 911 Turbo equipped with the $8,800 ceramic composite brake package. It's also the same stopping distance as the last Dodge Viper we tested and 2 feet shorter than the Corvette Z06.

Experience tells us that the Nissan GT-R's conventional iron rotors aren't going to endure abuse as well as the 911 Turbo's ceramic brakes, but in a one-stop scenario like this, we have no reason to doubt them. With a solid, effective and intuitive pedal, braking confidence is high. Plus, we're guessing future versions of the GT-R will get brakes as advanced as the Porsche's.autopartswarehouse

Predictable, Accessible Handling
Our makeshift test facility at the AMI Airport near Tokyo didn't allow room for lateral acceleration testing on a skid pad. However, we did set up our standard slalom for comparison. Again, we were somewhat thwarted by the less-than-ideal surface, which had unavoidable painted lines crossing the course.

This served as an opportunity to witness the GT-R's striking at-the-limit composure. Blasting across the bumpy painted lines between cones, you get the sense that this is truly a special car. Its chassis remains composed and it goes exactly where it's pointed despite the ugly surface. There's none of the puckering that comes with driving a Vette or Viper this fast through a slalom. Nor is there the sense that the rear-mounted engine of a 911 Turbo is eventually going to find its way to the front.

The Nissan GT-R is versatile, with plenty of control latitude, and the difference between the limit of grip and the limit of control is huge. It's probably the most easily controlled car we've slid sideways between the cones. More importantly, its abilities are far more accessible for the average driver than those of its competition.

At 72.9 mph, it's quicker here than the Z06 and 911 Turbo but can't quite match the huge-tired Viper (74.2 mph). Still, it will be interesting to see how these numbers compare when all three cars are tested at the same place and time.

The Best Part
Perhaps more impressive than the Nissan GT-R's brain-cell-punishing acceleration or its stellar handling is its price. At just under $70,000 it's within reach of the upper middle-class enthusiast who insists on spending disproportionate amounts of his income on a car.autopartswarehouse

Plus, it will take an average driver and hurtle them into a realm of speed they couldn't buy with a 911 Turbo. It's world-class fast and relatively cheap. And that's a hard combination to beat.
